What is the difference between a Service Dog, Emotional Support Dogs, and Therapy Dogs?
Service Dogs, Emotional Support Dogs, and Therapy Dogs are very different types of training.

Service Dogs
Service dogs are medically prescribed and trained for a single person’s needs and are trained to perform tasks to help mediate and alleviate the person’s needs through performing trained tasks. These dogs can only be trained for one person and require more in-depth training tailored to their handlers’ needs. These dogs are allowed everywhere and cannot be denied access.
Emotional Support Dogs
Emotional Support dogs are medically prescribed but are not required to have any specific training, at Fon’s Dog Training we offer the ability to train ESA’s to be obedient and perform comfort to a singular person, or to a family. These dogs are permitted into certain spaces, but do not have the same public access rights as service dogs.

Therapy Dogs
Therapy Dogs are trained to provide comfort to the community and are trained for many people. These dogs are pets with added abilities. These dogs do not hold the same values as a Service dog/ESA. They are required to pass a therapy dog test to ensure that they are social and friendly towards the public, and environmentally sound in the community. These dogs are only allowed in places by invitation only or pet friendly locations. (hospitals, VA centers, libraries by invitation only).
Frequently Asked Questions
When requesting a service dog, can I have my pick of breeds?
We try to meet requests for specific breeds, but availability may be limited. No matter what kind of dog you’re looking for, we’ll make it our top priority to find one.
What kind of training do your service dogs receive?
All our dogs are trained in obedience and have passed the following AKC tests: Canine Good Citizen, Urban Canine Good Citizen, Fon’s Dog Training Service Dog Evaluation and Certification.
Do you provide specialized training for service dogs to help with medical conditions?
When sourcing a pre-trained service dog, we unfortunately don’t offer any training for any pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, POTS, cardiac, or seizures + due to our facility not having the proper amenities for that specific training. We offer dogs for DPT as well as Psychiatric service, such as crowd mediation, mobility assistance, or anxiety relief.
How long will it take to get a pre-trained service dog?
Time frame for Pre-Trained Service dog readiness is 6-10 weeks. (dependent on handlers needs & delivery timeframe) • Delivery and Pickup are both available for Pre-Trained Service Dogs. delivery starting at $1500 + Dogs can be delivered to US, Canada, and Mexico at this time.
Will you ship a pre-trained service dog to me?
Pre-Trained Service dogs- Fon’s Dog Training does offer video chats to meet available dogs, but it is recommended that the future handler comes to meet their dog first, prior to bringing them home to ensure it is a proper fit for their needs.
Do you accept insurance?
Fon’s Dog Training unfortunately does not accept insurance at this time, but we do offer a payment plan that is available upon request.
Can we choose a specific puppy or breed for a service dog?
If you’re seeking an adolescent puppy, we can source one specifically for your needs, but there is no guarantee we’ll have a specific breed during that time frame, nor that the pup is guaranteed to pass our service dog evaluations.
Can we choose a dog and bring it to you to be trained as a service dog?
If you choose to source your own dog, we are happy to evaluate them at 10months + of age to view any behavioral / service dog potential. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the puppy will be a service dog candidate at 10months+ of age.
What service tasks will my trained dog perform?
The service tasks we teach at our facility are: Center, Behind, Watch, Front, Across, Right, Hug, Back, Closer, and Under. Additional tasks can be evaluated but are not promised as the dog may not hone the capabilities to perform.
How old does a dog have to be to be trained as a service dog?
If you were to purchase an 8-week-old puppy, or a 6-month-old puppy, service dog tasks will not be able to take place until the following year. Between that time frame it is your job to maintain the expectations of your puppy whether they came pre-trained, self-taught, or went to bootcamp. If there is no foundation to work off of, we will not be able to proceed with service dog training.
If I purchase a puppy from Fon's Canines, can it be trained to be a service dog?
Puppies purchased through us are not guaranteed to become service candidates as there are too many variables that may take place between purchase and test date. All puppies sourced through Fon’s Dog Training can be evaluated for Service dog training at the age of 10 months or older. We cannot begin service dog task training any younger as the dog is developing and the number of expectations for a puppy are limited.
Do you provide service dog vests, equipment, and patches?
It is the handler’s responsibility to purchase recommended equipment, training tools, service vest, & patches.
Can you evaluate my dog to see if they can be a service dog?
Service Dog Evaluations cost $300 (outside dogs, or Fon’s Dog Training recertification, recommended yearly)
What happens if my dog fails the service dog evaluation?
If the dog fails our Service Dog Evaluation post the 1yr mark due to aggression, or reactivity, the dog will not be allowed to reperform test.
Will my service dog need additional training?
If the dog shows lack of obedience and control, the owner will be responsible for adding additional training, and must pay for the initial evaluation price, and additional cost for retesting.
What types of service dogs do you offer and train?
We offer psychiatric service dogs and deep pressure therapy and crowd mediation, and mobility assistance. Any individuals with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetic, cardiac, or epileptic, etc. training will have to be sourced outside of Fon’s Dog Training as we do not have the facilities to provide medical training.
What type of service dog will I need?
We recommend you speak with your physician for details of what type of dog you would need, and we can help source a dog with a specific temperament, but we can unfortunately not complete any form of medical emergency training.
Can I bring my own dog in for an assessment?
If your dog is at least 10 months old, we can assess whether or not they have the right temperament to be trained as a service dog. Note, however, that not every puppy will mature into a suitable service dog candidate by the time it’s 10 months old.
To what extent can I guarantee the effectiveness of my service dog?
Your service dog will do best if you continue to work with them on their basic training. Service dog duties cannot begin until the next year if an 8-week-old puppy or a 6-month-old puppy without training is selected. Maintaining a steady regimen of training and reinforcement is crucial.
Is it important to have a service dog evaluated?
In order to keep your dog in peak working condition, regular examinations are essential. For $300, you may get your outside dog or Fon’s Dog Training evaluated and recertified every year.
If my dog does not pass the Service Dog Evaluation, what are my options?
If your dog shows signs of hostility or reactivity throughout the evaluation, they will be disqualified from doing the test again. Extra time and money may be needed to train a dog to obey and regulate itself.
Can I buy a puppy to train as a service dog?
Puppies, even those as young as 8 weeks old, can be purchased for between $2,300 and $3,500. But until next year, no work with service dogs may be done.
What if my dog already has a health problem?
We are experts in the areas of deep pressure therapy, crowd mediation, mobility help, and mental service canines. You will need to find medical education outside of Fon’s Dog Training for problems like diabetes and heart disease.
Does my dog have to have any training before becoming a service dog?
The Handler must perform and maintain public access training with the dog prior to beginning service work as the dog needs public exposure to maintain neutrality to various stimuli.
Please email us at contact@mank9.com or give us a call at (858) 799-0606 if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions. Here at Fon’s Dog Training, we’re committed to helping you and your service dog achieve new heights of freedom and fulfillment.
